An RN from France Supports Using Nuclear Energy for Bitcoin Mining

The right-wing Rassemblement National (RN) party is gaining significant popular support for Bitcoin mining, which is leading to a major political shift in France. Additionally, the party intends to use nuclear energy to fuel the process.
Party leader Marine Le Pen recently endorsed the concept of mining Bitcoin using excess nuclear power during a visit to the Flamanville nuclear power station. Her previous opinions had been strongly opposed to cryptocurrency; thus, this represents a significant U-turn.

Le Pen even demanded a complete ban on digital currencies back in 2016, claiming that they would deprive people of their financial autonomy. Her party, however, is now promoting Bitcoin as a means of generating national value from wasted electricity.

From Wasted Power to Digital Profit?

According to the RN’s suggestion, France produces a significant amount of nuclear energy. The European behemoth does not, however, utilize all of the energy it produces. Instead of squandering this energy, the RN suggests using it for the power-intensive activity of Bitcoin mining.

In Parliament, RN MP AurĂ©lien Lopez-Liguori is spearheading this initiative. He has written a law that would permit the installation of mining equipment at EDF’s (the state-controlled energy behemoth) facilities.

The goal of the shift, according to Lopez-Liguori, is to minimize waste and maximize resources. However, it’s also being presented as a step toward financial autonomy. The party contends that France might maintain its competitiveness in the global digital economy and strengthen its monetary sovereignty by mining Bitcoin domestically.

It’s interesting to note that several RN party members have contested the plan. Even if the party’s views on cryptocurrencies are evolving, some members are still wary of digital assets.

For instance, the leader of RN’s financial policy initiatives, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, has openly opposed the movement toward currency independence. According to Tanguy, this action contradicts the party’s long-standing endorsement of centralized monetary control.

Although there are disagreements inside the party, RN is at the forefront of crypto innovation in France. Parties on the left are more concerned with regulations and the environmental effects of digital assets.

Nonetheless, RN’s progressive stance has garnered backing from lobbying organizations and cryptocurrency entrepreneurs who believe the party is the path France needs and is crypto-friendly. Policies for bitcoin mining are being developed in several nations, including the US, Brazil, and Pakistan.
