Congress Remembers Dalai Lama and Nehru’s Four-Hour Talk in 1959

Congress politician Jairam Ramesh recalled his four-hour chat with then-prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Mussoorie in 1959 on Sunday, the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday.

According to Ramesh, the Dalai Lama then embarked on a lengthy tour of the whole nation. “Today is the iconic Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday,” the general secretary of the Congress wrote in a post on X. He had initially traveled to India from November 1956 to March 1957 to attend the ceremonies of the Buddha’s 2500th birthday. On March 31, 1959, he was granted permanent sanctuary in India. “Jawaharlal Nehru and the Dalai Lama spoke for four hours at Mussoorie on April 24, 1959. Mr. Ramesh stated that the only people present were the interpreters and Foreign Secretary Subimal Dutt.

According to him, the Dalai Lama then embarked on a lengthy tour of the whole nation.

Later, his establishment appeared in Dharamsala, and then there were Tibetan communities in Bylakuppe, Mundgod, and Hunsur, according to Mr. Ramesh.

He pointed out that the Dalai Lama provided intriguing new insights and disclosures on his remarkable life experience and his hardships in his book “Voice for the Voiceless,” which was published barely four months ago.
