When installed, these applications prompt users to provide their 12-word wallet recovery phrase, a confidential key that grants full access to one’s crypto wallet. As soon as a user inputs this phrase, hackers obtain control and can immediately transfer all funds out, resulting in victims being left with nothing.

The malicious individuals responsible for these applications are exploiting developer accounts that have been reused for other purposes. These accounts were previously utilized for legitimate applications such as games or media tools. Users were more inclined to trust these accounts, as they already had a good reputation. The harmful apps imitate the design, interface, and even package names of legitimate crypto wallet users apps, which makes distinguishing them difficult.

To compound the deceit, certain applications include phishing links in their privacy policies, which further mislead naïve users into providing their wallet credentials.
