India greets the Israel-Iran ceasefire: Prepared to contribute

Hours after US President Donald Trump asserted there was an Iran-Israel ceasefire, India announced on Tuesday that it is prepared to contribute to resolving the situation and emphasized that “dialogue and diplomacy” are the way forward.

New Delhi expressed that it continued to be “deeply concerned” about the overall situation but welcomed reports of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

Even though Trump declared a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, he later accused both parties of breaching it.

“We have been monitoring overnight developments concerning the Iran-Israel conflict, including US actions against Iran’s nuclear facilities and Iranian responses targeting US military bases in Qatar,” stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

“Although we are still very worried about the potential for lasting regional security and stability, we welcome news of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and acknowledge the contributions of the US and Qatar in making it happen,” it said.

New Delhi reiterated its call for a resolution of the conflict via dialogue and diplomacy.

The MEA stated, “We wish to reiterate that there is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy in addressing and resolving the multiple conflicts in the region.”

Modi had called for an immediate reduction of tensions in the situation through “dialogue and diplomacy.”

After the US bombed three major nuclear sites in Iran—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—thereby entering the Israel-Iran conflict, Pezeshkian initiated a phone conversation on Sunday.

“Detailed discussions were held regarding the current situation. In a social media post, Modi had said he “expressed deep concern at the recent escalations.

The prime minister added, “We reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy as the way forward and for the early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability.”

The US assault on Iranian nuclear sites had sparked concerns about a broader regional war.
