At the checkpoint in Attari today, Purnam Kumar Shaw, a member of the Border Security Force (BSF) who was arrested by Pakistan Rangers after unintentionally crossing the international border last month, was turned over to Indian authorities.

At around 10:30 a.m. today, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been held by the Pakistan Rangers since April 23, 2025, was turned over to India via the Joint Check Post Attari in Amritsar. On April 23, a day after the horrific terror incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, the 40-year-old BSF member, who was stationed in Firozpur, Punjab, unintentionally crossed the boundary. The terror attack led to heightened tension on the border and his return was delayed.

The BSF is responsible for protecting the 3,323-kilometer India-Pakistan border, which runs from Gujarat to Jammu & Kashmir. Unintentional crossings by BSF soldiers during patrols are frequent occurrences that are typically resolved through a flag meeting. According to sources, Pakistan had not been answering calls for such a meeting to discuss Mr. Shaw’s release because of border tensions. “Pakistan is not responding because of ongoing tension after the Pahalgam attack, but we have lodged our protest with the Pak Rangers and are making all efforts to bring back the jawan,” a police officer told ANI.

When Purnam Kumar Shaw entered Pakistan, he was wearing his uniform and had his service rifle with him. The 40-year-old has spent 17 years with the BSF years now. He is from West Bengal’s Hooghly.

Mr. Sahu’s seven-year-old kid, his pregnant wife Rajani, and other family members went to Chandigarh a few days after he was arrested in Pakistan. In order to learn more about the efforts being taken to get her husband back, she stated that she will be visiting Ferozepur.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal, had voiced worries about the BSF soldiers. “This is a very depressing circumstance. Kalyan Banerjee of our party is in communication with the family members. She had stated, “I want him to be rescued as soon as possible.”
