Norway Considers Temporary Ban on Crypto Mining to Address Energy Strain

The Norwegian government is considering a temporary ban on cryptocurrency mining as part of a broader effort to manage rising energy costs, reduce network strain, and address local concerns.

Officials confirmed that an investigation into the matter will begin this autumn to assess how mining operations are impacting Norway’s electricity grid, especially in regions experiencing capacity shortages and high demand volatility.

The move comes amid growing concern over the future scalability of crypto mining in the country, with particular attention on noise pollution, local infrastructure burdens, and the environmental footprint of energy-intensive proof-of-work systems like Bitcoin.

If implemented, Norway would join a growing list of countries—including China, Kazakhstan, and parts of Canada and the U.S.—that have introduced restrictions or outright bans on crypto mining in response to energy and environmental pressures.

A final decision is expected following the government’s detailed review later this year.
