Trump ceasefire claims and the Bihar SIR are pressed by the opposition at the all-party meeting before the monsoon session.

The opposition brought up several controversial topics at an all-party meeting called by the Union government on Sunday in advance of the Monsoon session of Parliament, including the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the revision of the voter rolls in Bihar, and US President Donald Trump’s controversial claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

The discussion swiftly shifted to acrimonious calls for accountability, even as the government sought the opposition parties’ help to ensure the House ran well.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, informed reporters that his party had requested a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Trump’s comments, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Bihar electoral records, and what he called the “lapses” that resulted in the Pahalgam incident. “PM Modi has a responsibility to address important issues brought up by the Congress in Parliament,” Gogoi stated.

CPI(M) MP John Brittas expressed similar worries and asked PM Modi to speak to the Parliament about Trump’s truce claims and the Pahalgam incident, saying both need immediate explanation.

Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party claimed to have brought up the “poll scam” associated with the SIR in Bihar, which opposition parties claim jeopardizes the freedom of residents to vote. Singh also took issue with Trump’s claim that India and Pakistan are negotiating a truce.

Singh stated in response to inquiries about political strategy that the AAP would run separately in the next state elections and that the INDIA group is still focused on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party, asserted that India’s foreign policy had “failed,” noting that no significant nation had sided with New Delhi during Operation Sindoor.

After the meeting, Yadav declared, “India’s foreign policy has failed… No country supported it on Operation Sindoor.”

Sasmit Patra of the BJD, however, shifted the conversation to domestic law and order, bringing up instances in Odisha such as a college student who set herself on fire and a 15-year-old girl who was set on fire.

“Law and order in Odisha has completely collapsed. According to Patra, the BJP government there is powerless and has failed.

“The Center cannot avoid accountability for the states’ deteriorating law and order. Parliament ought to discuss it,” he continued.

Union Minister and Rajya Sabha Leader JP Nadda presided over the meeting, while the government was represented by Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.

There were representatives from a number of opposition parties there, including Ramdas Athawale (RPI–A), Jairam Ramesh (Congress), Supriya Sule (NCP–Sharad Pawar), and TR Baalu (DMK).

The failure to bring those responsible for the Pahalgam attack to justice, worries that the SIR may stifle voting rights in Bihar, and Trump’s repeated, unsubstantiated claims that he was defusing previous India-Pakistan tensions are just a few of the noteworthy issues that opposition leaders have stated they would work to bring up during the Monsoon session.

The dates of the Monsoon session of Parliament are set for July 21–August 21, 2025.
