Facebook Introduces AI Photo Suggestions Using Cloud Processing
Facebook, the social media platform owned by Meta, is introducing a new AI-powered feature that prompts users to upload photos from their devices, even those not directly shared on the platform. The goal is to generate personalized content like collages, recaps, and story suggestions using artificial intelligence.
As first reported by TechCrunch, users in the U.S. and Canada are now seeing a new pop-up message when trying to create a Facebook Story. The prompt asks for permission to “allow cloud processing,” which would let Facebook continuously upload selected media from a user’s camera roll to its cloud. The system uses metadata such as time, location, and visual themes to make content suggestions.

“To create ideas for you, we’ll select media from your camera roll and upload it to our cloud on an ongoing basis,” reads the prompt. “Only you can see suggestions. Your media won’t be used for ads targeting. We’ll check it for safety and integrity purposes.”
If users agree, they also consent to Meta’s AI terms, which include analysis of facial features and other personal data. According to Meta, this feature is opt-in, can be turned off at any time, and is not yet available to all users.
AI Convenience or Privacy Trade-Off?
While Meta claims the data won’t be used for advertising, privacy advocates remain concerned. Even with consent, the company hasn’t clarified how long the uploaded media is stored, how it’s processed, or who can access it. Since the data is processed in the cloud, there’s inherent risk—especially when facial recognition or metadata like timestamps and geolocation are involved.

Just last month, Meta received approval from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission to begin training its AI models using public data shared by adults in the EU. However, in July 2024, Meta paused similar AI features in Brazil after the government flagged potential privacy violations.
Meta has also brought AI to WhatsApp, including a recent feature that summarizes unread messages. The company says this tool uses a privacy-first approach called “Private Processing.”
Global Privacy Scrutiny Intensifies
Meta isn’t alone in facing scrutiny. Recently, a German data protection agency urged Apple and Google to remove apps from DeepSeek—an AI company based in China—from their stores. The watchdog claimed the apps violated the EU’s GDPR by transmitting extensive user data, including text entries, chats, files, location data, and device information, to servers in China without adequate safeguards.
A report by Reuters also cited a U.S. official who claimed DeepSeek shares data with the Chinese government and supports military and intelligence operations.
In the U.S., AI integration is advancing rapidly. OpenAI recently signed a $200 million deal with the U.S. Department of Defense to develop AI prototypes aimed at enhancing national security, including cybersecurity and administrative tasks like healthcare access and data analysis.
